Ryzom in 2009
Is you cannot read this mail correctly, you can read it here.
Hello guren,
That's it! 2009 is almost over, and it's been a busy year for Ryzom and we'd like to make a small summary of everything we've accomplished.
No less than 5 patches were made in 2009! Here's a quick summary of the major changes in Ryzom:
The Kitins' Lair
Nevrax announced it years ago, and now finally the first part of the "Kitins' Lair" is now online and open for all! This area, for high level players, is introduced together with 2 new encyclopedia rites dedicated to the Kitins. These rites were created from scratch by the team with the objective of making something original.
The Web interface
A new technology has been made to develop applications for Ryzom, accessible in both your internet browser and directly from Ryzom. This technology is based on common Web technologies, so it has helped recruit web developers that don't need to understand the complexity of the Ryzom code in order to develop applications. Using this, we now have a new mail system, forums, profiles. Many other web applications will be developed in the future.
New tools for the Event team
Some changes you don't see directly, one of them being the new tools for the events team. We worked with them to provide them with tools to make more powerful event. For example, it is now possible for them to create events that last for a week or even longer. The events team can spawn NPCs, mobs or objects (like they have done this Halloween or are doing for the Christmas events.) Many things are now possible without needing the help of developers.
Changes in content
We have reworked many of the starter missions on Silan (level 0 to 30) to make them simpler and more understandable for new players. Then we added new missions to level 30 and 50 in order to better help the players upon their arrival on the mainland. We also changed the stats on one-handed weapons and improved the balance of melee fighting to give a new interest in training in one-handed melee.
Numerous interface improvements
A large number of changes have been made on the interface to make it more intuitive, more enjoyable. We decided to test a new design for the interface that we finally kept after the many positive reviews we received.
Translation
At each patch, we applied a lot of corrections on the texts in all 3 languages. The ring has also been fully translated into 3 languages. We plan to launch Ryzom in Russian and Spanish in 2010.
Bugfixes
It is often said that we should not build on poor foundations. Over 100 bugs, some serious, some less so, and some existing since 2004(!) were fixed to make Ryzom more robust. It was a work of ants and very ungrateful but the result is there. This now allows us to work more calmly on what is coming.
For those who want the complete list of all the changes that occurred in each patch in 2009, here are the links to all the release notes:
Version 1.3
Version 1.4
Version 1.5
Version 1.6
Version 1.7
And for 2010?
We will not slow down! Quite the contrary in fact; the year 2010 will be filled with a lot of ideas and projects that we are going to develop for you and for Ryzom.
The main focus for developments are:
new content
longer events
raising the level cap beyond 250
involving the players in the history of Ryzom more (power to the players)
Now, if you are happy with Ryzom and the work we are doing, please spread the word! You can forward this email, post it on your forums, but also tell all your friends. Ryzom's success is only possible through you! Thank you all.
We want to thank you for your support and your unconditional devotion that you have for Ryzom in 2009 and hope to see or see you back all in 2010.
Merry Christmas and happy New Year from the whole Ryzom team!
