Often reffered to as the Rainbow Nation, South African is a very racially diverse country. The capital city is Pretoria and the population is 50millions. There is 11 official languages as English, Afrikaans, Zulu, etc...
South Africa was ruled from 1948 to 1992 by an all-white governement under the system of apartheid, which separated people of different races and gave black people no political rights, forcing them to live in townships. In 1994, Nelson Mandela won South Africa's first democratic election and Nelson Mandela became the first post-apartheid black President of South Africa.

Nelson Mandela was involved in the struggle against the apartheid regime. Arrested in 1964, he was convicted of sabotage, sentenced to life imprisonment and incarcerated. In 1990 he negotiated the dismantling of apartheid. In 1993 he won the Nobel Peace Prize.

Stephen Biko was one of South Africa's best-known activists. He developed a national "Black Consciousness" movement to fight racism and apartheid. Arrested in 1977, he died in police custody, prompting international protests and UN embargo. In 1997, five former policemen admitted killing him.
